After taking the Ethics in Engineering unit, I've learned more about cost vs. safety. The Ford Pinto was an efficient car economically, but had many flaws in terms of safety and health. While developing the car, many ignored the fact that it was dangerous to drive and ended up releasing it anyways. Ford faced many legal and reputational backlash. One should always consider safety when developing an invention.
Here is a Poem about the Ford Pinto:
An aspiring invention
The Ford Pinto
In the hands of Mr.Iacocca
"safety doesn't sell," he said
What a stupid thought
The car did, in fact, sell
Yet many died for his sins
Mr. Iacocca had tipped the scales
The scales balancing cost and safety
From Iacocca's failures, we have learned
We now have guidance and revision
Admiral Emperor Eckhart will forever watch our process of invention and engineering
He will grant us safety and instruction
So that we never
Ever again
Have to face Iacocca's Blunder
